Temecula's annual Torch Run returns Sunday, Sept. 20, sending runners and walkers along a 7.2-mile route for its 25th year.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run brings officers, Special Olympics athletes and residents together to raise funds for athletes with intellectual disabilities in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Participants run or walk side by side along a course that starts at Pechanga Resort Casino, passes through Old Town Temecula and finishes at Promenade Temecula.
Opening ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. at Pechanga Resort Casino.
Pechanga Resort Casino is the presenting sponsor of this year's run, according to Special Olympics Southern California. The organization said Pechanga has long supported the event and that its sponsorship helps create opportunities for athletes to compete and grow.
Special Olympics of Southern California, Inland Empire provides free, year-round sports training and competition for people with intellectual disabilities across the two counties.
After the run, a Law Enforcement Expo and Vendor Fair takes over the plaza in front of Regal Edwards Cinema at the Promenade from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to the Promenade Temecula event listing. More than 50 local vendors and resource organizations are expected. Runners will enter through the palm tree-lined streets of the Promenade to reach the finish line.
The Temecula City Council's Sept. 8 agenda included an item to approve a sponsorship agreement with Special Olympics Southern California for the run, placed at the request of Mayor Alexander. Whether the council approved the agreement has not been confirmed.
The City of Temecula urged motorists to use extra caution on the road during the event. Drivers who spot runners along the route are encouraged to give them a wave.
