A 21-year-old Temecula woman faces homicide and other felony charges after allegedly fleeing a burglary scene and fatally striking a 13-year-old boy on an electric bike in Menifee.

Melody Valdez was booked at the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center on Tuesday, Sept. 15, after the collision at the intersection of Holland Avenue and Evans Road, according to the Menifee Police Department. The victim, a 13-year-old Menifee resident whose name has not been released, died from his injuries.

The incident began around 4:54 p.m. when Menifee officers responded to a reported burglary in progress in the 27000 block of Hemingway Court. As an officer arrived, the suspect vehicle was seen leaving the location. The officer attempted a traffic stop, but the driver failed to yield, triggering a brief pursuit.

During the chase, Valdez's vehicle traveled westbound on Holland Avenue at high speed, the department said in its press release. At the Holland Avenue and Evans Road intersection, the driver allegedly ran a red light and struck the boy, who was riding his e-bike northbound on Evans Road.

Officers provided emergency medical aid until Cal Fire personnel arrived and continued lifesaving efforts.

The boy did not survive.

After the collision, the suspect vehicle continued fleeing until it became disabled and came to a stop, according to the department. Valdez, described as the sole occupant, was taken into custody.

The full list of felony charges has not been made public. The press release, issued Wednesday, Sept. 16, under case number MN26-4649 and signed by Chief David Gutierrez, states only that the charges include homicide.

The California Highway Patrol's Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT), which specializes in fatal collision reconstruction, has taken over the crash investigation at Menifee police's request. The criminal case is being handled jointly by the Menifee Police Department and the Riverside County District Attorney's Office.
