Temecula property owners who had hazardous vegetation cleared from their land by the city could see those costs added to their next tax bill.
The Temecula City Council will hold a public hearing Tuesday, Nov. 10 on a resolution to confirm special assessments against parcels of land within the city for calendar year 2026 vegetation abatement. If approved, the abatement and removal costs would be placed on fiscal year 2027-28 tax assessment rolls.
The hearing begins at 3 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Temecula Civic Center, 41000 Main Street.
What's at stake
The city's weed abatement program operates citywide, but the assessments target only parcels where the city performed vegetation removal. The hearing notice does not list the number of affected parcels or the total dollar amount.
According to the city's weed abatement page, the program targets hazardous vegetation to reduce fire risk. Property owners in Temecula are legally required to maintain their land throughout the year, with heightened focus during fire season, which the city defines as typically April through November.
Property owners who do not clear violations on their own may face fines, forced abatement and liens on their tax roll, according to the city. Costs vary. The city notes that hiring a private contractor is often more affordable than paying the city's abatement charges.
How to weigh in
The hearing is open to the public.
The hearing notice states that any person may submit written comments to the City Council before the hearing or appear and speak at the meeting in support of or opposition to the assessments. Residents who attend in person can submit a speaker slip to the City Clerk. The city also accepts virtual comments through Zoom at TemeculaCA.gov/CityCouncilZoom, according to the city's agendas page.
The notice includes a legal provision: any petition for judicial review of the council's decision must be limited to issues raised at the hearing or in written correspondence delivered to the City Clerk at or before the hearing.
Property owners with questions can contact the Temecula Code Enforcement Division at (951) 302-4144. The Nov. 10 hearing starts at 3 p.m. at 41000 Main Street.
