San Diego County sheriff's deputies arrested a Temecula woman and a San Marcos man on Sept. 3 after serving search warrants in a large-scale fraud investigation.

Katie Ann Rhew, 44, was booked on suspicion of identity theft, possession of personal identifying information belonging to more than 10 victims, forgery, burglary, possession of methamphetamine, committing a felony while on bail and criminal conspiracy, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office said. Michael Sundstrom, 46, was booked on suspicion of identity theft, mail theft, possession of stolen property and criminal conspiracy.

Both were booked into the Vista Detention Facility, according to The Coast News. Patch reported Rhew was later held at the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in Santee on $300,000 bail. Fox 5 San Diego reported bail was set at about $600,000 for each suspect.

Deputies from the San Marcos Sheriff's Station served the warrants around 7 a.m. At Rhew's Temecula home, investigators recovered what Sgt. Nicholas Aranitis described as "hundreds of items associated with the production of forged documents, stolen credit cards and passports."

Investigators also found property they believe was fraudulently obtained from victims across San Diego, Riverside and Orange counties and from Arizona, the sheriff's office said.

Detective Brian Bentley told Fox 5 San Diego on Sept. 4 that the seized evidence contained personal identifying information for well over 100 people. Bentley described the stolen material as including mail, credit cards and personal documents taken from mailboxes or vehicles.

Fox 5 reported that a surveillance camera captured Rhew during a 2024 burglary at a San Marcos home. She was arrested two blocks from her Temecula home in that case, and detectives said they found stolen designer bags worth about $5,000.

Both suspects had been out on bail before the Sept. 3 arrests. Fox 5, citing court records, reported that Rhew and Sundstrom face more than 40 misdemeanor and felony charges in a February 2025 Escondido case involving alleged drug possession and theft of firearms.

The suspects were scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday, Sept. 9. No outcome from that hearing has been publicly reported.

The investigation remains ongoing. Bentley urged residents to monitor their financial accounts and personal information closely to help guard against identity theft.
